FOOTY SEASON SPECIAL

Piece by me in the Guardian on football supporters' trusts (squeezing a huge issue into a tight space I'm afraid, but hopefully the main point comes across).

Having my photo published alongside KK's is one of the very proudest moments of my life.

Here's another classic image of the great man:

England is a better place for having Joey Barton in it.

Hello,

Love the blog and the politics - but get the NUST right. They stopped talking to their members in 2009; they are invited to meetings held by all fans groups in Toon - but don't turn up and make their case. They had influence, members and credibility and lost them all. Your Guardian piece gave them the best publicity they've had in years. NUST are a bit worse than the Labour Party...more like a Stasi-lite. See any fans forum for details eg toontastic/newcastle online etc Cheers Joe ps , tell them to engage...at the moment they resemble Ashley's NUFC media policy too closely...remember the first time as tragedy; the second time as farce! -like the man said...

Cheers Joe, this is a pretty good point. However, I think NUST is still the best we've got: an organised body with a degree of institutional backing that might turn into something more powerful and wide-ranging a bit further down the line. As you say, surely re-engagement from NUST would be better than the alternative ie. waiting for another, perhaps equally short-lived organisation to materialise?

Alex,

We have the best city and people in the world. But we put up with mediocre politicians, media, arts and cultural leadership...I could go on. For once, when we started a proper, campaigning, engaged and relevant organisation with mass support and respect from the national media, govt. and institutions - we expected better. NUST is invited to join in with fans and re-connect. I hope you and they do that so that some of the power of being correct, representative and resourced comes out. Why don't you stand for the board?

Anonymous - cheers for this. I'm not really officially involved with the NUST or anything, but I might well forward them this.

Alex,

As if to prove my point about NUST...Now, 3 years after the resignation of KK following the 2008 transfer window debacle; we get a similar result, no communication from the club....and from NUST....WE GET EXACTLY THE SAME!!

Useless. But also sabotaging hopes of popular ownership by their incompetence. Are they Ashley in disguise? Or are they too important for their members?

Tell that to the Guardian!

Joe

Joe,

I agree that's pretty shabby. Unfortunately as I say I'm only tangentially involved with NUST (and the Guardian for that matter!). You should get on their case yourself - it certainly can't hurt.

Cheers for the message,

A
