The most depressing thing about this is that it was so unnecessary. He could easily have come out cautiously in favour of the strike, and suffered only mild flak from the right-wing press. He could have prepared the ground for a gradual reconstruction of pragmatic Labour populism. Not only would this have been the right thing to do, it would also have been successful.
Sometime soon, somebody will have the guts to do this. But, in a quick flash of cowardice and sheer mundane stupidity, Ed is finished.
I say this with absolutely no relish, though with some hope that his successor will learn from the monumental lack of character, principle, and imagination displayed here.

Yes, yes and yes to each paragraph. He's even an more depressing presence than Cameron now.
The only problem is, his vile brother is heir apparent. Can't they encourage Hilary Benn to have a shot, after giving him a boy's name? Anything but Milli Bandilli!
Hilary Benn is actually really competent - like his dad, only he could make an indigenous car industry work.
He's got no chance.......
It's remarkable how many otherwise sane people are eager to see David Miliband take over.
I genuinely don't think I can decide who is the nastier person out of him and Cameron. At least Cameron has something mildly pathetic and pitiful about him, unlike Dave M, the TonyMator 2 ...
I still can't forget David's quote: "We weren't aware that the U.S. was doing bad stuff to terrorism suspects".
Maybe they don't watch TV in the foreign office, but the rest of the world knew without any access to classified documents. I reckon David M grew out of Blair's stomach, like Klaatu in Total Recall. He was obviously too busy practicing hand movements for 13 years to bother with documents and stuff.
What happened to Hilary Benn BTW? Wasn't he sufficiently corrupt and stupid for Labour? Weren't dodgy deals with foreign aid agencies 'sexy' enough? Were they worried that Trotskyism was in his genes?
I can now watch the Thick of It as an accurate documentary rather than just a mildly exaggerated piece of satire. ed is hilarious. i don't want him to go too soon if he is going to produce gold like this.
